In 1990, North Carolina regulators issued a report stating that Perrier’s bottled water was contaminated with benzene, a poisonous liquid shown to cause cancer in laboratory animals. Dutch and Danish officials also found benzene in Perrier bottles. Perrier had to announce a world wide recall on the bottled water.

The North Carolina Agriculture Department in 1993 ordered eight brands of bottled waters to be taken from store shelves in the state. The agency claimed "false and deceptive labeling" saying companies actually drilled underground wells to pump water to the surface for bottling.
